The KMS Business Partners Program offers three (3) levels of sponsorship to support the needs of Kanapaha Middle School – Gold, Silver and Bronze. Each level provide different levels of visibility to the KMS Community and provides much needed funding for a broad range of items such as electronic readers, document cameras, books, and teacher mini-grants for special projects that engage our kids in interesting educational projects. 5K Corporate Sponsorship Form

We are inviting area businesses who support a healthy lifestyle to set up a booth on Saturday morning at the KMS track. We are requesting a $25 fee for this opportunity. We have identified a goal of 500 runners for this event with an anticipated group of supporters and volunteers of between 75 and 100 folks. Another opportunity to participate would be donation of items that can be provided to the runners on race day. At Kanapaha Middle School, we are so fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers! Thank you for all you do! Just a reminder that each year a new volunteer application needs to be filled out. They are available in the front office. There are a lot of opportunities to volunteer, some for an hour, some for a full day. Just pick one that sounds fun! Here is a list of upcoming events:

PTA Board Positions Open!

Positions open on the 2011-2012 Kanapaha PTA Board

President - oversees monthly board meetings, meet with principal to approve ideas for PTA, assist
committee chairs with planning for their committees

Membership - in charge of the PTA membership drive, make sure dues are paid to state PTA

Programs - help plan and organize PTA programs during the year

Newsletter Editor - create a school newsletter four times during the year, insert information from the
principal, teachers, guidance counselors, PTA board and others at the school into the newsletter and get
it ready to be printed (templates from previous year provided)

Ways and Means – come up with ways for the PTA to raise money to support the PTA programs such
as Heart to Heart, mini-grants, school newsletter, etc. (Chick fil A spirit night, plant sale, magnet and t-
shirt sales, etc.)

6th Grade Coordinator - work with 6th grade teachers to organize 6th Grade Olympics. A great way to
learn about the PTA board!

7th Grade Coordinator - meet with 7th grade teachers who are team leaders, organize 7th grade parents
to pick up food and other items on the night of the 8th grade social and help decorate for the social if
needed

8th Grade Social Planner - meet with 8th grade teachers who are the team leaders, organize and plan 8th
grade social, form a committee of parents who will help come up with ideas for decorations, food, etc.
for the social

Hospitality - oversee set up and clean up of monthly faculty breakfasts, volunteer coordinator will line
up volunteers to send in food

Heart to Heart – Heart to Heart helps Kanapaha students and families in times of need. The Heart to Heart chairperson will set up the Wheel of Hope at school dances and Coyote Howl to raise funds for this committee. Also, Heart to Heart collects school supplies at the beginning of the year.

Teacher Appreciation - organize teacher appreciation week activities happening in May, work with a committee to come up with ideas for a luncheon and activities during the week

Box tops coordinator - Twice a year have a box tops contest with all the classes. One class from each grade with the most boxtops wins a prize. The money earned goes to benefit the media center.

We will be adding more landscaping on our campus with money from the Lowe's grant we received in the spring. We will be planting groundcovers under the oak tree at the front of the school, adding shrubs near the 6th grade building, spreading pine needle mulch around the outdoor classrooms and large oak tree near the cafeteria and other jobs to help improve our campus! Also, an amendment to the Meet the Teacher announcement - due to the class size amendment, schedules will not be available Friday. However, please still plan to come between 1-2pm to meet your homeroom teacher and the teacher team for the grade.

Meet the Team!

KMS Meet the Team/Teacher is this Friday (August 20, 2010),1-2pm. Come get your child's class schedule and meet your child's teachers.

Make sure to stop in the cafeteria while your at the school - there will be uniform approved t-shirts and PE clothes for sale, as well as PTA members available to help answer any questions you may have.

Heart to Heart

This is a very special committee that takes care of our children. Our KMS PTA has provided food, backpacks, school materials, coats, shoes and the list goes on and on to our students in need.

Our supply closet has been greatly depleted. If you are able to donate any of the following items, it would be much appreciated:

Backpacks, new or gently used
One-inch binders
Sets of subject tabs
Folders that notebook paper can be secured into (three-prong folders)
Combination locks
Pencil pouches that will go inside a notebook
Three-subject notebooks
Glue sticks
Packs of colored pencils
USBs.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you are going to volunteer at the school this year, or go on a field trip with your child, you must have a volunteer application on file for the current year. You can print a copy of the application here.

Want to see a calendar with volunteer opportunities on it, or sign up to participate? Click on the button to the right for VolunteerSpot! You can sign up to volunteer online!

General Volunteering: Activities include but are not limited to book fair, field trip chaperones, dance chaperones, health and vision screenings, and assigning PE lockers.

Picture Day: Assist on student picture days on October 1st. Volunteers will be needed to collect picture orders and help with general organizing. Also, November 5th, a few volunteers will be needed to help with picture retakes.

6th Grade Olympics The third annual Sixth Grade
Olympics will take place Nov. 23. Students compete
in this athletic and academicevent with their World History
classes as different countries. Eleven volunteers will be needed so this event runs smoothly!

Monthly faculty breakfasts: Each month, the PTA provides a breakfast for faculty members at their faculty meetings. You can send in breakfast foods or come help set up and/or clean up after the breakfast.

Teacher Appreciation Week: We celebrate our great teachers each year with a week of activities. Usually, these activities include an ice cream sundae party on one day and a lunch on another day. Volunteers will be needed to help set up, serve and clean up after the events. Also, volunteers send in salads and desserts to be served to teachers during the luncheon.

Newsletter Committee: Meet approximately every 9 weeks to copy, fold and label the KMS newsletter. Also, if you are interested in being more involved at the school, we are in need of someone to be an apprentice to the person who is in charge of the newsletter this year. You will learn how the newsletter is put together this year, then take over the newsletter next year!

One Book, One School: This is a school wide program. All students in the school read a certain book, then the media center sets up activities to help the kids relate to the book. Many volunteers will be needed to make this event a success. Watch for more details.

Health Screening: Taking place on Wednesday, October 6th. The University of Florida will send students to help with this day, but a few Kanapaha parents will be needed to help the KMS nurse with checking student’s vision, hearing, height and weight.

ESE / Student Oral Testing: Assist ESE students with testing by reading the test out loud to them. Teachers will contact you when needed.

8th Grade Social: We will need parents to work with the 8th grade coordinator to make decorations and other plans for the 8th grade social. We will also need 7th grade parents to pick-up and serve food and drinks the night of the social. Chaperoning will be done by teachers and staff.

Science Fair: The morning of the science fair, we provide a breakfast for the judges who come to judge our science fair. We will post a list of needed breakfast foods to be sent in. Also, the day after the science fair, all students come with their science class to tour the science fair projects. We need volunteers to monitor the students while they are viewing the science fair projects in the media center. This event is held November 18th and 19th..

Spelling Bee: Assist in listening for correct spelling during spelling bee (your child (ren) must not be participating in the spelling bee to help with this event). This event is held in December, the exact date to be announced after the start of the school year.

Yearbook Ms. Putnam is the new teacher in charge of the yearbook this year. Volunteers are needed to help sell ads to local businesses who are interested in supporting Kanapaha's yearbook.

These two different times are being planned with all of you in mind...we are all working parents, we all just work different schedules.
